One reason why eBooks can bring attention to your home based business is because they are packed with content. Just think about it. Nowadays, anyone browsing the Internet for information quickly encounters eBooks. Sometimes these eBooks (ie. electronic books) are clearly identified by name and intent. However, often times I have seen eBooks which have been so brilliantly disguised that a reader may not even realize that is is actually an eBook, and not a website or newsletter.
So the question arises, “What exactly is an eBook?” Well, as alluded to above, an eBook is simply an electronic book. Many ebooks today are found in pdf (ie. portable document format), but you can also find various word processing documents being used as ebooks as well as programs and text files which also serve as ebooks. Furthermore, there exist some unique programs which can create ebooks in a format which is specific to that program.
Just like any paper book, eBooks are composed of written subject matter in a convenient bundle. Both contain the same information, but this information is transferred to the reader by using different methods. However, eBooks have some advantages which traditional books simply do not offer. For instance, the contents of eBooks can be protected from unauthorized copying, or sharing with third parties.
One thing which I have noticed over the past eight or nine years is that publishing companies are now creating electronic versions of their physical books. Regardless of this fact, the vast majority of eBooks are created by the owners of a home based business, or a similarly small scale operation. As such, it is more likely that a reader will be able to find an eBook which relates specifically to the niche they wish to learn more about.
While eBooks are used to share information, teach, entertain, and sell or promote, in the same way as their paper counterparts, they have some advantages. For one, they are much less expensive to produce, and can move from idea to finished product much more quickly as well. Furthermore, they can be transmitted to someone in the comforts of their own home within milliseconds. This low cost and easy dissemination makes ebooks much easier and more cost-effective to keep updated. In addition, eBooks allow greater interactivity with the reader and the Internet.
Now here is where you, the home based business owner come in. You have a couple of uses for eBooks. First, you can create an eBook and sell it on the open market. Many home business owners have had massive success doing this. However, where I think you will have the biggest benefit, is if you give your eBook away. This is a marketing tactic which has proven to be extremely successful and has become one of the leading viral marketing methods.
Furthermore, any home based business owner is able to establish their credibility and expert status by giving those in their niche market priceless facts. This credibility and expert status will usually lead to the reader visiting the author’s website or subscribing to the author’s newsletter via e-mail. This approach is referred to as a “soft sell”. Essentially, the author is just trying to get their foot in the door, and start out by having the reader visit their website, or sign up for their newsletter. Conversely, the “hard sale” approach is more direct. Here, the author attempts to sell their product right in the eBook itself. Whether you choose one method or the other, the fact still remains that if you compose a highly informative eBook, which can be freely disseminated to others online, the book will eventually become viral. Thus, it will continually work to promote the author’s newsletter, website, products, and/or services.
Nonetheless, you should always consider eBooks as a cost effective method of marketing your home based business. Their reach can go beyond what you ever envisioned within your marketing plan.
