So, you want to take over the web, huh? You have dreams of dominating the internet? You see yourself becoming the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs? Well, the first step in world wide web domination is picking a domain type and a name.

There are some key things to think about before picking a domain type. For example, budget considerations come immediately to mind. Also, the right address will bring traffic naturally. This is the type of name to focus on.

There are, of course, the obvious choices when it comes to domain types: .com, .net, and .org. Each has its own strengths and drawbacks, but all are easily recognized by the public and investors alike.

There are a whole slew of country codes for domain name extensions. Almost every country in the world has its own unique Top Level Domain, such as .ca in Canada and .uk in the United Kingdom. These have varying degrees of reliability and different rules governing their use.

While most of the so-called good names are taken under the realm of .com, .net, .org and country codes, there are other domains available that are relatively unused. Take, for example, the alternative extensions of .name and .info. Many such names are cheap and plentiful.

There is one other option available to you: The Sub-Domain. This is the segment usually utilizing the “www” section of the address. You can make it anything you want, with the caveat that this will also make your domain address more complicated and could backfire.

Cost could be a deciding factor in your domain process. Some domains are more expensive than others, with .coms running in the vicinity of $6 per domain to .orgs that generally cost around $14 or $15 per registration.

Of course, domain name registrars are running businesses like any other. And like any other, there will be sales or special deals from time to time. Keep an eye out for deals or special packages that domain name registrars will make available.
