Sugar Town - Amusing mosaic of LA life characterizing a handful of characters whose lives join together - a musician would-be who’ll do anything to get ahead, an uptight lone woman who allures the unsuitable men like a magnet, and a band made up of cleaned-up ’80s rock megastars, to name a few. Made on a shoestring, although intelligent and well recognized; outstanding cast comprises a number of real life musicians. Cast includes Ally Sheedy, Rosanna Arquette, John Taylor, Jade Gordon, Michael Des Barres, Lucinda Jenney, and Martin Kemp. (92 minutes, 1999)
Hanky Panky - Blameless designer Wilder is chased by snoops, cops, etc. Unsurprising, hardly preposterous comedy-thriller, with Radner miscast as the love interest. The motion picture was meant to be a follow-up to Stir Crazy, although Richard Pryor’s part was modified for Gilda. You have watched it all before, and better. Having lost his memory when almost being killed, Bourne is retracing his past to try to know who he was, and why everyone wants him dead. All his skills are put to the test, as the C.I.A. is persistent in its effort to have him eliminated. Starring Matt Damon and Julia Stiles.
Solar Crisis - Futuristic sci-fi thriller with Matheson leading a save the Earth mission to the sun to stop a solar flash from annihilating the world. Fine visual effects and exciting story in space harmed by world pranks of poor boy Boyle who absurdly desires to challenge the mission. Cast includes Tim Matheson, Charlton Heston, Peter Boyle, and Annabel Schofield. (112 minutes, 1990)
Live Flesh - Lovesick child of a prostitute is jailed for inadvertently shooting and paralyzing a cop. Original narrative of teenager’s mistake that takes him to prison. Spanish language. Cinematically stimulating, albeit, with a bravura finale. Cast includes Pedro Almodovar, Liberto Rabal, Francesca Neri, Javier Bardem, Angela Molina, Jose Sancho, and Penelope Cruz. Life on a Strand - Musical, strikingly filmed account of a blind boy who’s informed by his master that his ability to see can be fixed if he commits his life to music; he gets to be a saintly old gentleman still without ability to see who voyages from village to village with his youthful pupil harmonizing songs, which he finds emotionally nurturing. Considerate film stuffed with poetic energy, and a soundtrack of significant melodies. Cast includes Liu Zhong Yuan, Huang Lei, Xu Qing, Ma Ling, and Zhang Zhengguan. (110 minutes, 1991)
