Understanding Your Roll In A Voice Over Script

Add comments

Whether the script you’re working with is a short commercial piece or a longer narration voice over job, you don’t have the leisure as a voice talent to develop the character as you read the script. You have to start out knowing who your character is, what the setting is, and what the purpose of the script is. There’s no time for fumbling through a read! Part of your practice before you even head into your recording book should involve answering those questions.

Method acting can be used for voice overs, even though no one will see what you look like! To help you get into character, ask yourself what was going on the moment before the script begins. If you’re working with a shorter script, you’ll probably notice that it is one of these:

1) The character is easy to relate to and the problem or situation tends to be boiler-plate. If these voice jobs are your niche, you usually know what to do with it.

2. The script is so short that you’re not sure if it’s in your niche or not! Sometimes the copywriters aren’t able to flesh out the script well enough, so they hope the voice actor will know how to interpret the copy.

In the second scenario, imagining a back story can help you get into character and sound more natural.

Figure out where the script takes place, what your character was doing right before the script picks up, and who he/she is talking to. Pick a scenario and commit to it. Then match your pitch, attitude, volume and energy to fit that situation. Your performance will probably become very natural after that.

If your interpretation doesn’t sound right when you play back the recording, don’t worry! Re-think the back story and try it again. The fun part about doing voice overs is that you get the creative freedom to work with different characters!
